EMC History:
The Emanuel Medical Center was
opened as Emanuel County Hospital on June 1, 1952. In
1970, a 49-bed skilled care nursing home was opened for
long-term care, thus changing the name of the facility
to Emanuel County Hospital and Nursing Home.
Twenty-four private rooms were added to the facility in
1972. Another addition was opened in August 1983, which
included a new Emergency Room Suite, ICU/CCU area, and
other support areas. Since 1991, Emanuel County
Hospital and Nursing Home has owned several physician
offices as well. On January 1, 1996, the name was
officially changed to Emanuel Medical Center.
Emanuel Medical Center is operated
as a public, non-profit organization and is directed by
the Emanuel County Hospital Authority. The Authority is
comprised of eight citizens of Emanuel County plus the
current Chief of the Medical Staff. The Emanuel County
Hospital Authority is responsible for establishing
polices by which Emanuel Medical Center operates. The
Administrator is appointed by the Authority and is the
direct representative of the Authority responsible for
the effective day-to-day operation of the facility.
